I'm still unclear on some things

I realize the bible is the basis for all of our laws, but I'm still
unclear on some things.

1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Can I own Canadians?

2. I had a daughter and wanted to sell her into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price?

3. I know that I am allowed no contact with men while in my period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15: 19-24. Do I have to take this as personal time off work or just unpaid medical leave?

4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. My neighbors claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2.clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?

6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an
abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than
homosexuality. Is there a difference between lobster and scallops? Can you settle this? Are there 'degrees' of abomination?

7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle-room here?

8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. Do I have to kill them myself or is there someone I can just report them to?

9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

10. Many local farmers violate Lev.19:19 by planting two different
crops in the same field. Many of my co-workers wear garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16.

Couldn't we just burn them to death like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

Do something nice for someone else, that if you were being just a little more selfish you wouldn't want to do. This does not include things you would do anyway, 'cause that's not really doing something nice for someone else.

I sent my SO to play softball with friends, without me, while I stayed home with the sick baby.

He's happy. I'm wrangling a sick baby and a little lonely, but I think the world is a better place (even just slightly).

I am the boy who never finished high school, because I got called a fag everyday

I am the girl kicked out of her home because I confided in my mother that I am a lesbian.

I am the prostitute working the streets because nobody will hire a transsexual woman.

I am the sister who holds her gay brother tight through the painful, tear-filled nights.

We are the parents who buried our daughter long before her time.

I am the man who died alone in the hospital because they would not let my partner of twenty-seven years into the room.

I am the foster child who wakes up with nightmares of being taken away from the two fathers who are the only loving family I have ever had. I wish they could adopt me.

I am not one of the lucky ones. I killed myself just weeks before graduating high school. It was simply too much to bear.

We are the couple who had the realtor hang up on us when she found out we wanted to rent a one-bedroom for two men.

I am the person who never knows which bathroom I should use if I want to avoid getting the management called on me.

I am the mother who is not allowed to even visit the children I bore, nursed, and raised. The court says I am an unfit mother because I now live with another woman.

I am the domestic-violence survivor who found the support system grow suddenly cold and distant when they found out my abusive partner is also a woman.

I am the father who has never hugged his son because I grew up afraid to show affection to other men.

I am the home-economics teacher who always wanted to teach gym until someone told me that only lesbians do that.

I am the woman who died when the EMTs stopped treating me as soon as they realized I was transsexual.

I am the person who feels guilty because I think I could be a much better person if I didnt have to always deal with society hating me.

I am the man who stopped attending church, not because I don't believe, but because they closed their doors to my kind.

I am the person who has to hide what this world needs most, love.

I am the person ashamed to tell my own friends im a lesbian, because they constantly make fun of them.

I am the boy tied to a fence, beaten to a bloody pulp and left to die because two straight men wanted to "teach me a lesson"

And I am the person who has not yet had to deal with these atrocities, because our society IS slowly changing, due to both the trailblazers of the past and people like me, who will no longer take it, and will shout out loud to the world "I AM DIFFERENT!!!! Celebrate Your Freedoms on July 4, 2005

Brothers and Sisters,

Let us Celebrate one positive thing today, the 4th of July. As much as we want to motivate change in our society, there are some things that are good and noble and worth continued support. I would suggest that we could encourage joy in the freedoms that we are given by our Constitution and Bill of Rights.

I wrote in my online journal about the Freedom of Speech, and how I believe it should be supported, no matter how terrible the things people wish to speak freely about (and included an example I consider to be particularily opposed to peace and freedom and understanding).

I'm inspired to ask the question, in light of the "Justice Sunday" broadcast yesterday and the spirit of Mr. Carroll's article: How do we force the level of public debate back up when the other side is determined to keep civility out of fashion? Rep. Tom DeLay, Sen. Frist, Ms. Ann Coulter seem to be examples in a lack of interest in reasoned debate.
